Skipjacks End Losing Streak

Skipjacks End Losing Streak

The Chesapeake College Skipjacks headed into a long travel weekend on a four-game losing streak after dropping a heartbreaker on a foul with less than a second left at CCBC – Catonsville 57-54. The four-game losing streak is the longest in Coach Sachs' tenure at Chesapeake.

The Jacks first game of the weekend was at Garrett College.  Chesapeake came out with a fast start during the first half and headed into the half with a 40-30 advantage.  Chesapeake came out of halftime with energy and immediately bumped the lead up to 19. Garrett chipped away at the lead and eventually was able to cut the lead down to single digits. Garrett continued with the momentum of the game as they chipped the lead down to a one possession game with four minutes remaining. It was back-and-forth scoring until Chesapeake bumped the lead up late to a three-possession game. The Jacks held on and won a big region XX road game 73-65.

SO La'Shaun Moody (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge) led the way for the Skipjacks with an all-around performance. He scored 25 points and added five rebounds, four steals, and two assists.  SO Xavier Buchanan (Waldorf, MD/St. Charles) added 12 points and eight rebounds. SO Marquis Hamby (Troy, NY/Winchendon Prep) chipped in 11.

In less than 24 hours, the Skipjacks were in Western Pennsylvania for another Region XX match up at Westmoreland CC.  Starting with the jump ball both teams immediately started with energy.  Both teams would then go on to score at a high clip for the remainder of the first half. Chesapeake led the way at the halfway point, 53-45.

After halftime, Chesapeake came out and turned up the intensity on defense. The full court pressure was the big difference in the second half. The Skipjacks were able to wear down Westmoreland with their press defense, which enabled Chesapeake to get of easy baskets. The turnover margin was a huge stat that helped Chesapeake slow down Westmoreland from scoring and secure the win. Chesapeake ended the game with only eight turnovers and caused 19 turnovers for Westmoreland. The final score for the game was 110-84.  Most points in a game this season for Chesapeake.
