WYE MILLS, MD - Chesapeake men's basketball was back at it again in their home of Skipjack Arena on Friday night, facing off to CCBC Catonsville for an eventful and energetic evening in store. The Skipjacks ultimately came out on top securing another win in the books, solidifying a final result of 75-66 over the Cardinals.
There were some definite stand-out leaders of the game whose dedication on the court was reflected on the scoreboard. #11 Mahzi Thames was a force to be reckoned with, managing an impressive 26 points, 5 assists, 4 defensive rebounds, and 3 steals to show for his commitment to the game throughout the night.
Next in line of Skipjacks' top scorers would be #5 JayShaun Freeman, hitting double digits himself with a solid 14 points, as well as #22 Craig Turner trailing closely behind with a noteworthy 12 points - as well as earning a total of 7 rebounds.
At the half, Chesapeake was in a favorable position having so far secured a 5-point lead over the Cardinals, with a standing score of 27-22. While still leading on the court thus far, the home team knew they couldn't lose their concentration and they'd need to finish out the second half the same way that they'd started out - focused, strong, and on top of the scoreboard.
Returning to the game, the Skipjacks came back out competitively pressing Catonsville, continuing to work both sides of the court as they did in the 1st. With 10:00 to go, the energy in the room was unexpectedly shaken up when the Cardinals surpassed the Skipjacks on the board, taking the lead for the very first time of the night, bringing the score to 42-40.
This moment would become pivotal as to which direction the rest of the evening would be taken in depending on the impact of such a turn taken. Skipjack's freshman #4 DJ Earl turned the energy back up a notch higher after successfully fighting for the rebound and adding 2 to the board, tying the game back up at 51-51, and shifting the momentum of the game once again with 6:30 left to go.
In the end, it was evident that Chesapeake had put everything they had in them into fighting for this home win, and their hard work and tenacity worked to their advantage ending the evening with an official final score of 75-66, Skipjacks.
Chesapeake is taking the remainder of the weekend to rest and recuperate before traveling to Hagerstown, MD on Monday, December 6th to face the Hagerstown Hawks at 7:30 PM.
