Small’s big game helps ’Jacks stay unbeaten
BALTIMORE – Sydney Small hit eight 3-pointers Saturday afternoon on the way to a game-high 28 points as Chesapeake College pulled away in the second half to earn an 88-67 women's basketball victory over Potomac State College of West Virginia University.
"I could tell in warm-ups that my shot was on," said Small, who went 8-for-13 from behind the 3-point line and 9-for-15 overall from the field.
"She (Small) shot the lights out today," said Chesapeake head coach Damon Nichols, whose team improved to 6-0 after winning for the second straight day in a Baltimore City Community College mixer.
Small led five Skipjacks into double figures against PSC. Dejhonae Cannady scored 14 points, Brittany Taylor (seven rebounds, six assists) added 13, Tyonna Teamer contributed 12, and Najah Chambers (four steals, two blocks) had 10.
Chesapeake used a late, first-half spurt to take a 38-29 lead at the break before exploding for 50 second-half points.
"It took us until the middle of the second half to get rolling," said Nichols.
Jenna McAtee and Rachel Waiboga each scored 16 points to pace the Catamounts.
Small said the Skipjacks are steadily improving.
"Our team chemistry is really coming together," said Small, who also led the Skipjacks with 15 points in Friday's 74-39 victory over Globe Institute of Technology. "We know where everyone's going to be on the court and we know each other's strengths and weaknesses."
Cannady (seven steals, six rebounds) scored 14 points against Globe while Chambers (13 rebounds) and Teamer added 11 each. Taylor (four steals) chipped in nine points and Brianna Lawson contributed eight points and three steals.
