Weyermiller, Tyner each pitch shutouts as 20-0 Skipjacks sweep Allegany College

WYE MILLS – Stephanie Weyermiller and Kellieann Tyner, backed by strong defensive efforts, each threw each a complete-game shutout Wednesday afternoon as Chesapeake College's undefeated women's softball team swept visiting Allegany College of Maryland, 10-0 and 8-0.

Weyermiller threw a one-hitter – yielding only a third-inning single to Danielle Smith – with two walks and four strikeouts in the opener.  The only hits surrendered by Tyner in the nightcap were consecutive, one-out singles to Samantha Frankenberry and Kaylee DeVore in the fourth inning.  Weyermiller, now playing first base, cut down Frankenberry at the plate with a good throw to catcher Kaley Schreiber after fielding Bailey Sinai's grounder, and Tyner whiffed Alayna Harshberger to end the threat.

Tyner was also aided by a first-inning, 5-4-3 double play started by third baseman Samantha Greenwell, and right fielder Michelle Lawrenson's third-inning throw to first that nabbed Christina Briscoe, who appeared to have a routine single to short right.  Lawrenson's play kept alive Tyner's bid for a second consecutive no-hitter, which was eventually ended by Frankenberry's single.

"They always have my back," said Tyner, who struck out eight and walked just one.  "I don't have to think twice when the ball is hit."

"This is the best defensive team I've ever played for, hands-down," said Weyermiller.

"The pitching has been really strong and the defense has been making plays," said Chesapeake head coach Durrie Hayes, whose Skipjacks improved to 20-0 with the sweep.

Chesapeake exploded for nine first-inning runs to take command of the opener as Weyermiller helped herself with a pair of two-run doubles.  Hannah Stringer also had two hits for the Skipjacks, who had six of their seven hits in the first inning of the five-inning opener.

The nightcap provided a little more suspense.  Chesapeake scored single runs in each of the first three innings and broke the game open with a four-run fourth that featured a three-run homer by Greenwell (2-for-2, two walks, three runs).  Cheyenne Riley singled in Greenwell, who now has three homers on the year, in the sixth to end the game on the eight-run slaughter rule.

While Chesapeake had only eight hits in Game 2, the Trojans' two pitchers gave up eight walks and their defense committed five errors.

Allegany, which is not competing in Maryland JuCo this year, fell to 1-11.

While pleased to be 20-0, Hayes noted that the Skipjacks' toughest games are yet to come, including two with CCBC-Catonsville (20-8, 8-0), which has won 14 straight games.

"We've got some stuff to work on," said Hayes, whose team is scheduled to play 14 games in 12 days starting with the Allegany doubleheader.  "We just need to continue to get better."
