Skipjacks sweep DuPage, run record to 8-0
COCOA BEACH, Fla. – The Skipjacks didn't trail in any of their first seven women's softball games this year. A first-inning run by the College of DuPage in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader gave Chesapeake College head coach Durrie Hayes an opportunity to see how his team would react to a deficit.
The Skipjacks responded immediately, and with a vengeance.
Chesapeake erupted for four runs in the bottom of the first inning on the way to a 5-2 victory as the Skipjacks completed the sweep and improved to 8-0. Taryn Zietlow's bases-loaded grounder brought in both the tying and go-ahead runs – with the second run unearned due to a DePage error – and Abby Tyner capped the rally with a two-run single.
"It was a nice response from our girls," Hayes said of the Skipjacks' rally against DuPage (3-3), which is currently ranked seventh in the nation in NJCAA Division III.
Michelle Lawrenson (2-0) became the fourth Chesapeake pitcher to notch a victory during the first four games of the Skipjacks' spring trip, scattering eight hits over six innings. Lawrenson struck out two and walked one in six innings before Kellieann Tyner earned her second save by retiring three straight hitters in the seventh with the tying run at the plate.
"All four of our pitchers who have started have thrown the ball really well," said Hayes. "We're also hitting and making most of the defensive plays."
The Skipjacks play a Tuesday doubleheader against Tompkins Cortland (N.Y.) Community College, a perennial Division III title contender off to a slow (1-5) start this season.
