Skipjacks score 127 while routing Shoremen JV
WYE MILLS– Chad Church came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points Monday night as eight Skipjacks reached double digits in Chesapeake College's 127-70 men's basketball victory over Washington College's junior varsity.
The Skipjacks (3-3) had just one point less in the second half than Washington College scored in the entire contest as Chesapeake snapped a two-game losing streak. Joel Dearring's hot-shooting club shot nearly as well from the field (57 percent) as from the foul line (62 percent), with reserves Justin May (14 points) and Brandon Stewart (11 points, four assists) combining for 25 points on 10-for-13 shooting from the floor.
"We looked at a lot of different combinations Monday night," said Dearring. "It was a game we could get a lot of people minutes. It usually takes a coach about 10 games to get to know his team. I'm trying to see what everyone can do."
Kevin Bonsu and Jahmante Jackson were the fourth and fifth Skipjack reserves in double figures with 10 points each.
Starters William Gilmore (14 points, team-high 10 assists) and Geran Pope (13 points, team-high 13 rebounds) each had double-doubles for the Skipjacks. Pope has posted double-doubles in all six games this season, while Gilmore also notched seven rebounds and six steals.
"William played well – really well," said Dearring.
Jeffrey Rogers added 11 points while Dion Bivens (4-for-4 from the field) nearly made it nine Skipjacks in double figures before settling for eight points.
Ben Mortimer and Sam Ijeomah, who had a team-high 12 steals, each added six points for Chesapeake.
"Sam was all over the place," Dearring said of Ijeomah. "He has the heart of a lion."
The Skipjacks had the game well in hand at halftime, taking a 58-33 lead into intermission, before exploding for 69 second-half points.
Chesapeake hosts CCBC-Catonsville Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Garrett College Saturday at 5 p.m.
"Those are both region games as well as conference games," said Dearring, "so they're twice as important."
