’Jacks top Montgomery, still unbeaten in league
ROCKVILLE – Chesapeake College passed its first major conference test Thursday afternoon as Trent Ehret drove in four runs to lead the Skipjacks to a 5-1 baseball victory over host Montgomery College.
Ehret went 2-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and two stolen bases as the Skipjacks (15-8 overall, 6-0 Maryland JuCo) won their sixth straight game. Chesapeake is one of three teams still unbeaten in conference play – the others being CCBC-Catonsville and Frederick – as the Skipjacks dropped Montgomery (11-4, 3-2) two games back in the loss column.
"They're a very good team," Chesapeake head coach Frank Szymanski said of the Raptors. "With their record and talent, it was exciting. The pitching and defense was very solid and we got some big, timely hits."
Jordan Gowe went 3-for-5 while Kam Stewart, Danny Allen and Lane Farmer each had two hits for the Skipjacks. That offense was more than enough as Tyler Tobin (4-1) and Tyler McGovern (first save) combined on a four-hitter.
Chesapeake scored single runs in the first, fourth, and fifth to build a 3-0 lead.
Gowe doubled and Ehret singled him home in the first to give Chesapeake a 1-0 lead. Stewart singled leading off the third, stole second, took third on an Allen hit and scored on an error to make it 2-0.
Farmer doubled leading off the fifth, took third on a Gowe single, and scored on Ehret's sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. The Raptors got a run back in the home fifth, but Chesapeake broke the game open with two runs in the top of the ninth as two walks set up Ehret's two-run single.
"He (Ehret) hit the ball hard all day," said Szymanski.
Tobin went seven innings, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out three. McGovern pitched the final two innings, yielding one hit and two walks with one strikeout and one hit batter.
