Busy Chesapeake College improves to 7-1
WYE MILLS – Chesapeake College swept Prince George's Community College Saturday in the Skipjacks' league-opening doubleheader and split a pair of games with Alfred State College on Sunday, leaving the Skipjacks with a 7-1 record and a lot of good experience.
"Three of those four games were very competitive and, for the most part, well-played," said Chesapeake head coach Frank Szymanski. "It gave us a chance to see how we would react in tight games.
"We also got to see a lot of different players in lot of different situations that will help us down the road," added Szymanski.
Chesapeake 4, Prince George's 3 (8 innings)
WYE MILLS – Kam Stewart went 3-for-3 and scored twice, including the winning run on Dillon Shaw's single in the bottom of the eighth to start Chesapeake on the way to Saturday's doubleheader sweep.
Chesapeake only had five hits, but benefited from four Owl errors.
Reliever Connor Gorman notched his first win of the season with 3 2/3 innings of no-hit relief. Gorman struck out one and walked one while blanking the Owls after replacing starter Jim Wix, who allowed only five hits and one earned run in the first 4 1/3 innings.
Luis Hidalgo (run, RBI) and William Lope (RBI) each had two hits as part of PG's six-hit attack.
Chesapeake 5, PGCC 1
WYE MILLS – Blake Musser (two runs, RBI) and Jordan Gowe (run) each went 3-for-3 and Daniel Allen (RBI) banged out two hits as the Skipjacks completed Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Prince George's.
Trent Ehret (run) and Kam Stewart each went 1-for-3 and drove in a run for the Skipjacks, who blew out to a 5-0 lead after three innings.
Tyler Tobin spaced six hits over 4 2/3 innings with two walks and two strikeouts to earn the win. Tyler McGovern struck out six over 2 1/3 hitless innings with one walk to finish up the game.
Reliever Jonathon Pow took the loss, yielding five runs (three earned) on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts while pitching the final five innings.
Chris Brown had two of the Owls' five hits in the nightcap.
Chesapeake 12, Alfred 2
WYE MILLS – Jordan Gowe went 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI and Dillon Shaw (double) also drove in three runs to pace Chesapeake in Sunday's opener.
R.J. Angermier allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks over four innings earn the victory. Scott Abt had a walk and a strikeout while pitching the final inning of the five-inning game.
Alfred 1, Chesapeake 0
WYE MILLS – Anthony Gonz singled in Steven Stapl in the top of the third for the game's only run as Alfred State College earned a split of Sunday's doubleheader and handed the Skipjacks their first loss of the season.
Losing pitcher Jack Wood (North Caroline High) struck out nine with just one walk while allowing three hits in a complete-game effort.
"I think Jack Wood deserves a little bit of recognition," said Chesapeake head coach Frank Szymanski. "He pitched an outstanding game. Jack showed excellent poise and command of the strike zone."
Trent Ehret had both of Chesapeake's hits off Alfred's Colton Caldwell, who pitched a complete game.
