Bio

Ed Baker, a professor of kinesiology and wellness, has served the Athletic Department in a variety of roles during his 43-year career at Chesapeake College.

Dr. Baker was head men's basketball coach from 1971 to 1979, guiding the Skipjacks to a then-school-record 21 wins during the 1973-74 season, and also served as assistant baseball coach from 1971 to 1973. Baker, at Athletic Director Frank Szymanski's request, provides both formal and informal academic and personal advising for Chesapeake's student/athletes and oversees the college's fitness center.

"Dr. Baker is a great resource for our students, and he's a great resource for me, too," Szymanski said. "He has a lot of experience working in and around the Athletic Department, and I feel fortunate I can take advantage of his expertise."

Dr. Baker teaches a weight-training course recommended to student/athletes, and provides all interested students with orientation sessions on how to properly use the fitness center equipment. He believes student/athletes can greatly increase their athletic performance with an appropriate weight-training and cardio program.

"If someone works hard, he or she can increase strength and performance 100 percent in a year. That happens on a regular basis," Dr. Baker said. "If you achieve those kind of results, you can compete at a much higher level."

Dr. Baker teaches fitness and wellness and stress management courses in addition to weight training. He resides in Ridgely with his wife, Bonnie, who retired as the media specialist at Ridgely Elementary School. He and Bonnie have two grown daughters – Jodi and Jill.
